The dollar finished exactly where it started
For anyone converting dollars into francs, the week changed nothing: USD/CHF closed at 0.8094, within two points of the previous Friday. The journey, though, was worth watching. Capped below 0.8100 on Monday, the greenback broke through on Tuesday and peaked at 0.8157 on Wednesday, before the yen's reversal and Governor Waller's remarks pulled it back to 0.8052 on Thursday. A hundred points of range for a net move of zero: the timing of a conversion mattered far more than the week itself.
Strong US data, and a dollar that fell regardless
The employment report delivered 162,000 job creations against 55,000 expected, unemployment steady at 4.1% and participation up at 61.6%. Yet the dollar index ended at 99.14, down around 0.5% on the week. What neutralised that print was the yen taking control and dragging the whole dollar complex with it.
US August CPI, released on Friday 11 September and expected at 0.4% month on month, will settle the question: above consensus, it would make the dollar-to-franc conversion more favourable.
