The year's high acted as a ceiling, not a springboard

Starting from 0.9373, EUR/CHF moved straight up to the 0.9410 resistance early in the week. It gave way on Tuesday, with a 52-week high at 0.9418, followed by 0.9435 on Wednesday. The former resistance turned into support before breaking in turn on Thursday, and the cross closed exactly at 0.9400, up 0.29%. More than sixty points of range for a marginal gain: the franc switched sides mid-week, weighed down until Wednesday by the combined rise in oil and US yields, then supported by the return of safe-haven flows in the wake of the yen.

Swiss inflation came in higher than expected, but changes nothing

August inflation printed at 0.8% year on year against 0.5% expected. The surprise came from energy, and the figure remains in line with the SNB's 0.7% forecast for the third quarter. Second-quarter GDP, up 1.5%, does not alter the equation either: the 24 September meeting is fully priced as a hold.

The next key date is Thursday 10 September, with a 25 basis point ECB hike to 2.50% expected by every economist surveyed. Absent a US surprise, 0.9435 remains the reference ceiling.
