Swiss franc remains virtually unchanged against the pound

Against the British pound, the Swiss franc ended the week on par. The GBP/CHF pair fluctuated within a range between 1.0958 and 1.1061, ultimately finishing at 1.0968, representing a negligible variation of +0.01%. The British currency had, however, been among the strongest performers on Tuesday, bolstered in particular by Labour’s clear victory in the Holborn and St Pancras by-election, before retreating on Wednesday alongside risk-sensitive currencies. The pound failed to maintain its initial gains against the franc.

An SNB in no rush to act against European currencies

For its part, the Swiss currency lacked support early in the week as risk appetite diverted flows away from safe havens. Swiss National Bank Chairman Martin Schlegel described the franc as stable in real terms without hinting at any foreign exchange market intervention. With a policy rate maintained at 0%, a SARON at -0.04%, and inflation standing at 1.0% in the middle of the 0 to 2% target band, the Swiss institution feels no urgency to act. For the pound, the real test will come with the Autumn Budget on October 28.

Two refusals, for opposite reasons

The franc and the pound share a peculiarity: they are two major European currencies that stayed out of the single currency. The paths that took them there have nothing in common. Switzerland never had to choose, not being a member of the Union. The United Kingdom did choose. Twice.

The first time by accident. On 16 September 1992, the Bank of England raised its policy rate from 10 to 12 and then 15 per cent in a single day to keep the pound inside the European exchange rate mechanism. It failed before the evening and left the mechanism. That “Black Wednesday” cost several billion pounds and durably cooled the idea of a monetary peg in London.

The second time by treaty: at Maastricht the United Kingdom obtained an opt-out clause exempting it from adopting the euro. Twenty-four years later, the 2016 referendum made the question moot.

What that changes for the rate

These two forms of independence are not equivalent on the market. The pound remains correlated with the euro area, its first trading partner: it follows its cycles while reacting to its own rates. The franc does the opposite. It decorrelates precisely when the area is doing badly, because that is when people take shelter in it.

GBP/CHF is for that reason one of the pairs that reveal the European mood most clearly: it widens when worry rises, it tightens when worry falls back.

8 questions
What is the difference between this converter and a real exchange?

The converter displays the global interbank rate without fees. However, to carry out a real exchange of swiss franc to pound sterling, the financial institution you use (bank or platform) will add a margin. At b-sharpe, our applied exchange rate includes very low transaction fees (from 0.12%), which are significantly lower than those of traditional banks.

Why convert swiss franc with b-sharpe rather than my bank?

Banks often apply hidden margins of up to 2% on the exchange rate. With b-sharpe, fees start from 0.12% and are always based on the interbank rate. In addition, you always have visibility on the exact amount you will receive before confirming. This saves you up to 80% on your transaction fees.
