The technical picture
of the GBP / EUR rate
Over twelve months, the GBP / EUR rate has gained 4.2 %. It currently sits in the upper part of that range.
The GBP / EUR rate is at a one-year high. The month extends the quarter, which gives the move some consistency. It is one of the steadiest pairs we cover.
Pound gains against the euro
Sterling proved stronger than the single currency over the week. While the euro remained under pressure, EUR/GBP notably hit a new year-to-date low. This positive momentum for the British currency is driven by the resilience of the UK economy: gross domestic product grew by 0.1% in August, defying forecasts of a contraction. This figure supports monetary expectations, with traders now pricing in an approximately 77% chance of the Bank of England raising interest rates in November.
Euro weakened by French budget tensions
For its part, the European currency remains penalized by the political context in France. The opening of parliamentary debates on Tuesday over a draft budget considered largely insufficient has revived financial concerns. The yield spread between the OAT and the Bund thus widened to around 151 basis points, an unprecedented level since 2012. The next major event for the eurozone will take place next Friday with Moody’s verdict on the French sovereign rating, ahead of the British budget scheduled for October 28.

The narrowest of
the major pairs
A band of a few pennies
Since 2016 EUR/GBP has moved essentially between 0.83 and 0.90. Measured against the amplitudes of EUR/USD or GBP/JPY, that is very little. The reason lies in economic geography: the European Union absorbs about four tenths of British exports. The two economies go through the same shocks within a few weeks of each other.
That narrowness has an unpleasant counterpart. When the yearly movement is counted in pennies, the margin taken by the intermediary can represent more than the market variation over a whole year. On this pair more than on any other, the cost of the conversion is the subject.
What the 2021 agreement changed for payments
The trade and cooperation agreement between the United Kingdom and the European Union has applied since 1 January 2021. It removes customs duties on goods but restores neither the financial passport nor the single market in services, which make up the bulk of British trade.
The United Kingdom did, however, stay inside the single euro payments area. A euro transfer to London therefore follows the same rules as a transfer to Milan, which often surprises people. The brake is no longer regulatory. It is in the rate applied to the conversion.

Frequently asked questions about GBP / EUR exchange
The GBP / EUR converter
6 questionsWhat is the b-sharpe GBP / EUR currency converter for?
This tool shows the value of the pound in euros in real time, as traded on the interbank market, in other words between banks. This rate contains no margin and no fees: it is the benchmark for knowing how many euros you should really get for your pounds. The chart also shows you how the British currency has moved over the last 30 days. To actually exchange your money, visit change your currency.
How much is 1,000 pounds sterling in euros today?
Enter 1,000 in the tool above: the amount in euros is displayed immediately, at the current rate. To do the calculation yourself, multiply the number of pounds by the GBP/EUR rate: for example, at a rate of 1.16, 1,000 pounds are worth 1,160 euros. The pound sterling, whose symbol is £ and code GBP, is the currency of the United Kingdom; the euro is the currency of the countries in the euro area. This result is a reference value: the amount you receive depends on the margin and fees applied by your bank or provider.
Is the GBP / EUR rate updated in real time?
Yes, the displayed rate follows the foreign exchange market in real time during its opening hours, and it can change within minutes. The value of the pound against the euro reacts in particular to monetary policy decisions by the Bank of England and the European Central Bank, as well as to inflation figures on both sides of the Channel. The 30-day chart lets you place today’s rate within its trend, whether upward or downward. If the rate suits you, you can lock it for 48 hours from your client area.
Is the pound sterling stronger than the euro?
In value terms, yes: one pound has long been worth more than one euro, so you need more euros than pounds for the same amount. But a rate above 1 says nothing, on its own, about the strength of a currency: what matters to you is how it moves and when you exchange your money. Several factors move the pound against the euro, such as the inflation gap between the United Kingdom and the euro area, the interest rates set by the two central banks or the British political context. To follow these movements without watching the market constantly, you can create a rate alert.
Does the GBP / EUR rate displayed on the converter include fees?
No. The rate displayed on the b-sharpe converter is the interbank rate, i.e. the market rate without any added fees. This is the purest reference value, the one banks use among themselves. The rate you will get when making a real exchange through b-sharpe includes transaction fees from 0.12%, which allows savings of up to 80% compared to banks.
Does the converter take weekends into account?
The foreign exchange market is closed at weekends: on Saturday and Sunday, the rate displayed is the last known one, for information only. When the market reopens, the value of the pound in euros may differ from it, particularly after a major announcement in the United Kingdom or the euro area. Transactions resume on Monday morning, and a rate locked on Friday remains valid for 48 hours. So as not to miss a movement at the start of the week, set up a rate alert.
Exchanging GBP / EUR with b-sharpe
8 questionsHow do I convert pounds to euros at the best price?
The first step is to compare the rate you are offered with the mid-market rate shown above: the smaller the gap, the less money you lose. Banks often apply a margin of up to 2%, rarely presented as separate fees, whereas b-sharpe starts from the interbank rate with fees from 0.12%, decreasing as the amount increases. For banknotes and coins brought back from a trip to the United Kingdom, a bureau de change remains the simplest solution, but the price gap there is often higher. For money held in an account, an online transfer through a specialist provider is generally more advantageous.
Why convert pound sterling with b-sharpe rather than my bank?
Banks often apply hidden margins of up to 2% on the exchange rate. With b-sharpe, fees start from 0.12% and are always based on the interbank rate. In addition, you always have visibility on the exact amount you will receive before confirming. This saves you up to 80% on your transaction fees.
Can I lock the rate I see now?
The online converter displays the market rate in real time without fees, for simulation purposes. To lock a rate and initiate a transaction, simply create a free account on b-sharpe. From your client area, you can lock your rate for 48 hours. You will then have full visibility of the final amount to be received, including our transaction fees (from 0.12%): no surprises, you receive exactly the displayed amount. You can also set up rate alerts to be notified when the GBP / EUR rate reaches your desired threshold.
How long does it take to exchange pounds sterling for euros?
Once b-sharpe has received your pounds, generally allow 1 to 2 working days for the euros to reach your account. The timeframe starts when the funds are received: add the time it takes to transfer your money from the United Kingdom or another country. It also varies depending on the amount and the bank receiving the euros, with weekends and public holidays not counted. In all cases, the exact amount you will receive is displayed before you confirm.
Is my money safe?
b-sharpe is a Swiss financial intermediary, affiliated to SO-FIT, a self-regulatory organisation recognised by FINMA, the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority, and subject to anti-money laundering rules. The pounds you send are received in a bank account in Switzerland, separate from the company’s own funds. These funds are covered by insurance of CHF 5 million against fraud and hacking. Finally, b-sharpe cannot debit money from your accounts: you are always the one who initiates the transfer.
Is there a minimum amount to exchange currencies?
No, there is no minimum amount for a one-off transaction, whether you exchange a few pounds or a large sum. There is no subscription and no fixed fee: only transaction fees apply, from 0.12% and decreasing as the amount increases. Before confirming, you see exactly how many euros you will receive. For a large amount, b-sharpe’s desk can help you secure your rate.
How can I convert income received in the United Kingdom into euros?
If you live in the euro area and receive pounds sterling, for example a UK pension, rent from a property in the United Kingdom or pay from a British company, each currency exchange through your bank can be expensive. The exchange margin applies to every transfer. With b-sharpe, you transfer your pounds from the account where you receive them, then exchange them for euros when the rate suits you, using rate alerts and the 48-hour rate lock. For example, on 20,000 pounds of income a year, a 1% difference already represents 200 pounds.
How do I create a b-sharpe account?
Opening a b-sharpe account is free and without commitment: you only pay fees when you exchange money. Registration is done online or in the mobile app, and b-sharpe accepts residents of European countries, not just those of Switzerland. If your file is complete, the account is generally activated in less than 24 working hours. You will then find in your client area the details for sending your pounds, as well as the rate lock and rate alerts.
