The Euro and the British Pound under Pressure against the Dollar

The euro and the British pound both lost ground over the past week. Against the greenback, the single currency fell by 0.81 % to end at 1.1390, after opening at 1.1467 and hitting a low of 1.1370. The euro suffered from rising US rates, its dependence on energy imports, and German political risk following the regional elections in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Berlin.

For its part, the British currency followed a similar trend against the dollar, with GBP/USD sliding from 1.3377 on Monday to 1.3215 on Thursday. The pound was weighed down by disappointing PMI readings, highlighted by a composite indicator falling to 51.7 compared to 52.5, signaling sluggish growth combined with price pressures. Against the Swiss franc, GBP/CHF nonetheless gained 50 points on Thursday to reach 1.0970 after the SNB decision, limiting its weekly decline to 0.37 % at 1.0967.

Inflation Indicators in Focus

The next major event for the eurozone is scheduled for Friday, October 2, with the release of flash inflation expected at 3.5 % or higher, compared to 3.2 % previously.

Three exits in thirty years

The history of EUR/GBP is that of a failed rapprochement, attempted three times. In 1990 the United Kingdom entered the European exchange rate mechanism, ancestor of the euro, which limited fluctuations between European currencies. It left two years later, on 16 September 1992, after a day in which the Bank of England exhausted its reserves defending the pound.

The second exit was negotiated: the opt-out obtained at Maastricht relieved the country of adopting the euro. The third came in 2016, by referendum. Each time the pound fell: by about 15 per cent after 1992, by 10 per cent the day after the 2016 vote.

The pound before the dollar

It is worth remembering what the pound once was. Until the First World War it was the reference currency of world trade: two thirds of international exchanges were settled in sterling. The City of London financed railways on three continents.

The shift to the dollar took a generation and played out across two wars. In 1949 and again in 1967 the pound was devalued. Those were the last attempts to hold a rank it no longer had. It remains today the fourth most traded currency in the world. That rank is considerable for an economy of this size. It is the direct legacy of that period.

8 questions
What is the difference between this converter and a real exchange?

The converter displays the global interbank rate without fees. However, to carry out a real exchange of euro to pound sterling, the financial institution you use (bank or platform) will add a margin. At b-sharpe, our applied exchange rate includes very low transaction fees (from 0.12%), which are significantly lower than those of traditional banks.

Why convert euro with b-sharpe rather than my bank?

Banks often apply hidden margins of up to 2% on the exchange rate. With b-sharpe, fees start from 0.12% and are always based on the interbank rate. In addition, you always have visibility on the exact amount you will receive before confirming. This saves you up to 80% on your transaction fees.

Can I lock the rate I see now?

The online converter displays the market rate in real time without fees, for simulation purposes. To lock a rate and initiate a transaction, simply create a free account on b-sharpe. From your client area, you can lock your rate for 48 hours.
