The technical picture
of the JPY / EUR rate
Over twelve months, the JPY / EUR rate ends up almost where it started. It currently sits in the upper part of that range.
The JPY / EUR rate has held steady over the past thirty days. The move stays contained: no direction has taken hold in the short term.
The yen regains ground against the euro
The Japanese currency benefited from strong political support late in the week. Despite a Bank of Japan rate hike to 1,25 %, USD/JPY initially rose to 159,04 on Thursday before facing an intense verbal offensive. Donald Trump reportedly expressed concerns over the weakness of the Japanese currency, while Prime Minister Takaichi considered it undervalued and the Finance Minister stated she expected a correction. Driven by these remarks, the yen established itself on Friday as the top-performing G10 currency, pushing the dollar back below 157,00 to finish at 157,22.
A single currency weighed down by economic and political vulnerabilities
Faced with the strengthening of the Japanese currency, the euro came under pressure across the board. EUR/USD dropped 0,81 % over the week, moving from an open at 1,1467 to a close at 1,1390 after touching a low of 1,1370. The single currency is suffering from rising US rates, its heavy dependence on energy imports exacerbated by threats to US diesel, as well as German political risk following the regional elections in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Berlin.

Why a cross moves more
EUR/JPY does not include the dollar. On the market it is nonetheless built from two pairs that do: euro against dollar and dollar against yen. The movements of both add up instead of cancelling out, which gives the cross a wider amplitude than either of its components.
That is why it serves as a barometer. When risk appetite rises, the euro gains and the yen falls back: the pair climbs fast. When caution returns, it comes down just as fast. Few rates translate the mood of the markets so legibly.
Japanese savings invested in Europe
Japan is the world’s first creditor. Its life insurers and pension funds, faced for thirty years with domestic yields close to zero, have placed considerable sums in foreign bonds, part of them in euros.
Those investments are not market bets but long-term commitments, often hedged against exchange rate risk. When the cost of that hedge rises, because the interest rate gap widens, Japanese investors reduce their purchases. EUR/JPY feels it before the statistics do.

The JPY / EUR converter
6 questionsWhat is the b-sharpe JPY / EUR currency converter for?
This tool shows the live value of the yen in euros, at the reference rate used between banks, with no margin or commission added. It tells you how many euros you should really get for your yen, before you compare with a provider’s offer. The chart also shows how the Japanese currency has moved against the euro over the last 30 days. To take action, visit change your currency.
How much is 1 yen in euros today?
The value of one yen in euros is shown in the tool above, at the current rate. As one yen is worth only a fraction of a cent, it is more meaningful to think in round sums: for example, at a rate of 0.0056 euro per yen, 1,000 yen are worth around 5.60 euros, and 10,000 yen around 56 euros. The yen, whose code is JPY and symbol ¥, is the currency of Japan. This result is a reference value: the sum you receive depends on the margin applied by your provider.
Is the JPY / EUR rate updated in real time?
Yes, the yen to euro rate is updated continuously during opening hours, and it can move within minutes. It reacts in particular to decisions by the Bank of Japan and the European Central Bank, as well as to inflation figures published on both sides. The chart lets you place today’s rate within its recent evolution. When it suits you, you can lock it for 48 hours from your client area.
How do I read the yen to euro rate?
The JPY/EUR rate shows how many euros one yen is worth: as this figure is very small, many websites display the inverse rate instead, EUR/JPY, which shows how many yen one euro is worth. Each can be derived from the other: a rate of 0.0056 euro per yen corresponds to around 178 yen per euro. When the yen strengthens, you get more euros for the same sum in yen; when it weakens, the opposite applies. Before comparing two offers, always check which way the rate is expressed.
Does the JPY / EUR rate displayed on the converter include fees?
No. The rate displayed on the b-sharpe converter is the interbank rate, i.e. the market rate without any added fees. This is the purest reference value, the one banks use among themselves. The rate you will get when making a real exchange through b-sharpe includes transaction fees from 0.12%, which allows savings of up to 80% compared to banks.
Does the converter take weekends into account?
At weekends, currency trading stops: on Saturday and Sunday, the displayed rate is the last known one, for information only. When trading resumes, the value of the yen in euros may differ from it, particularly after a major announcement in Japan or the euro area. Transactions resume at the start of the week, and a rate locked on Friday remains valid for 48 hours. So as not to miss a movement, set up a rate alert.

8 questionsHow do I exchange yen for euros after a trip to Japan?
For banknotes brought back from a trip to Japan, a bureau de change or your bank can buy them back, but often with a significant gap compared with the reference rate: it is therefore better to keep only a small amount when you return. For money held in an account, such as savings or a leftover travel budget, a bank transfer through an online provider is more suitable. With b-sharpe, your yen are exchanged into euros on the basis of the interbank rate, with a commission from 0.12%, decreasing as the sum increases. Before confirming, you see exactly how many euros you will receive.
Why convert yen with b-sharpe rather than my bank?
Banks often apply hidden margins of up to 2% on the exchange rate. With b-sharpe, fees start from 0.12% and are always based on the interbank rate. In addition, you always have visibility on the exact amount you will receive before confirming. This saves you up to 80% on your transaction fees.
Can I lock the rate I see now?

In all cases, the exact sum in euros you will receive is displayed before you confirm.
Is my money safe?
b-sharpe is a Swiss financial intermediary, affiliated to SO-FIT, a self-regulatory organisation recognised by FINMA, the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority, and subject to anti-money laundering rules. The funds you send are received in an account in Switzerland, separate from the company’s money, and covered by insurance of CHF 5 million against fraud and hacking. b-sharpe cannot debit money from you: every transfer is initiated by you. Its services are available online and in the mobile app, with personal support from Geneva.
