The dirham
and Europe

The Burj Khalifa above downtown Dubai

A currency younger than the federation

The dirham of the United Arab Emirates was born in May 1973, less than two years after the federation itself. It replaced two currencies that coexisted on the territory: the Dubai and Qatar riyal on one side, the Bahraini dinar that circulated in Abu Dhabi on the other. Unifying the currency was one of the first concrete acts of the union of the seven emirates.

Its name comes from the Greek drachma, which passed into Arabic through the dirham of the Umayyad caliphates. More than a thousand years of continuity, for a currency that is fifty years old.

A trade corridor, not a balance of power

The European Union is one of the first trading partners of the Emirates. Dubai serves as a re-export platform towards East Africa and South Asia. AED/EUR is therefore not a speculative pair: it is an invoicing rate, used by importers, exporters and a large diaspora.

Since the dirham is pegged to the dollar, this rate says nothing about the Emirati economy: it mechanically follows EUR/USD. A European exporter to the Emirates is therefore watching, in practice, the dollar.

Frequently asked questions about AED / EUR exchange

The AED / EUR converter

6 questions
What is the b-sharpe AED / EUR currency converter for?

This tool shows the live value of the UAE dirham in euros, at the reference rate used between banks, with no margin or commission added. It tells you how many euros you should really get for your dirhams, before you compare with the offer from your bank or another provider. The chart also shows how the pair has moved over the last 30 days. To take action, visit change your currency.

How much is 1 AED in euros today?

The value of one AED in euros is shown in the tool above, at the current rate, and you can enter any amount. To do the calculation yourself, multiply the sum in dirhams by the day’s rate: for example, if 1 AED equals 0.24 euro, 1,000 AED are worth 240 euros. AED is the code of the United Arab Emirates dirham, divided into 100 fils, not to be confused with the Moroccan dirham (MAD). This result is a reference value: the sum you receive depends on the margin applied by your bank or provider.

Is the AED / EUR rate updated in real time?

Yes, the displayed rate is updated continuously during opening hours, and it can move within minutes. As the dirham is pegged to the US dollar, its movements against the euro in practice reflect those of the euro against the dollar: a decision by the US Federal Reserve or the European Central Bank can therefore move it. The chart lets you place today’s rate within its recent trend. When it suits you, you can lock it for 48 hours from your client area.

Why does the AED to euro rate depend on the dollar?

Since 1997, the Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates has maintained a fixed rate of 3.6725 dirhams to one US dollar. The dirham therefore does not move against the dollar: when the euro strengthens against the dollar, a dirham is worth fewer euros, and vice versa. In practice, to know whether it is a good time to exchange your dirhams for euros, you simply need to follow the euro against the dollar. You can also create a rate alert to be notified when the rate reaches the level you are aiming for.

Does the AED / EUR rate displayed on the converter include fees?

No. The rate displayed on the b-sharpe converter is the interbank rate, i.e. the market rate without any added fees. This is the purest reference value, the one banks use among themselves. The rate you will get when making a real exchange through b-sharpe includes transaction fees from 0.12%, which allows savings of up to 80% compared to banks.

Does the converter take weekends into account?

At weekends, currency trading stops: on Saturday and Sunday, the displayed rate is the last known one, for information only. When trading resumes, the value of the dirham in euros may differ from it, particularly if the euro has moved against the dollar after a major announcement. Transactions resume on Monday morning, and a rate locked on Friday remains valid for 48 hours. So as not to miss a movement, set up a rate alert.

Exchanging AED / EUR with b-sharpe

8 questions
How do I exchange AED for euros?

For banknotes brought back from a stay in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, a bureau de change or your bank can buy them back, but often with a significant gap compared with the reference rate. For dirhams held in an account, a bank transfer is more suitable, through your bank or an online provider. With b-sharpe, you send your AED to the details shown in your client area, then they are converted into euros on the basis of the interbank rate, with transaction fees from 0.12% that decrease as the amount increases. The exact amount in euros you will receive is displayed before you confirm.

Why convert uae dirham with b-sharpe rather than my bank?

Banks often apply hidden margins of up to 2% on the exchange rate. With b-sharpe, fees start from 0.12% and are always based on the interbank rate. In addition, you always have visibility on the exact amount you will receive before confirming. This saves you up to 80% on your transaction fees.

Can I lock the rate I see now?

The online converter displays the market rate in real time without fees, for simulation purposes. To lock a rate and initiate a transaction, simply create a free account on b-sharpe. From your client area, you can lock your rate for 48 hours. You will then have full visibility of the final amount to be received, including our transaction fees (from 0.12%): no surprises, you receive exactly the displayed amount. You can also set up rate alerts to be notified when the AED / EUR rate reaches your desired threshold.

How long does an AED to euro transfer take?

Once b-sharpe has received your dirhams, generally allow 1 to 2 working days for the euros to reach your account. The timeframe starts when the funds are received: add the time your transfer from the United Arab Emirates takes, which depends on your bank there. It also varies depending on the amount and the bank receiving the euros, with weekends and public holidays not counted. In all cases, the exact amount you will receive is displayed before you confirm.

Is my money safe?

b-sharpe is a Swiss financial intermediary, affiliated to SO-FIT, a self-regulatory organisation recognised by FINMA, the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority, and subject to anti-money laundering rules. The dirhams you send are received in a bank account in Switzerland, separate from the company’s own funds. They are covered by insurance of CHF 5 million against fraud and hacking. Finally, b-sharpe cannot debit money from your accounts: you are always the one who initiates the transfer.

Is there a minimum amount to exchange currencies?

No, there is no minimum amount for a one-off transaction, whether you exchange a few hundred dirhams or a large sum. There is no subscription and no fixed fee: only transaction fees apply, from 0.12% and decreasing as the amount increases. Before confirming, you see exactly how many euros you will receive. For a large amount, b-sharpe’s desk can help you secure your rate.

How can I bring money held in the Emirates back into euros?

If you live in Europe and hold dirhams in the United Arab Emirates, for example savings built up during an expatriation in Dubai, rent from a property there or the proceeds of a sale, each conversion through your bank can be costly in exchange margins. With b-sharpe, you transfer these dirhams from the account where they are held, then exchange them for euros when the rate suits you. Rate alerts and the 48-hour rate lock help you choose the moment, especially for large amounts. For example, on 200,000 AED of savings, a 1% difference already represents 2,000 AED, or around 480 euros.

How do I create a b-sharpe account?

Opening a b-sharpe account is free and without commitment: you only pay when you exchange money. It is done online or in the mobile app, and b-sharpe accepts residents of European countries, not just those of Switzerland. If your file is complete, activation generally takes less than 24 working hours. You then have access to the details for sending your dirhams, the rate lock and rate alerts.
