The dollar advances against the euro

The US dollar strengthened against the single currency, with the euro losing 0.43 % against the greenback over the week. The European currency suffered from political and fiscal uncertainties in France, marked by renewed protests, a call by trade unions for a national strike on November 5, and snap elections called in Spain. After a brief respite on Tuesday following the presentation of an alternative budget by Marine Le Pen, French yields resumed their rise on Wednesday amid denied rumors regarding Paris short-term debt issuance.

Monetary divergence between the Fed and the ECB

The greenback found solid support in monetary policy stances: the Federal Reserve confirmed that its hiking cycle was not over, while Brent crude closed above 104 USD per barrel. Conversely, the minutes of the European Central Bank’s September meeting proved more dovish than expected. The Frankfurt-based institution emphasized that rising long-term yields supported the intended monetary tightening, thereby reducing the need to raise its own key interest rates further, while the ten-year yield spread between France and Germany narrowed to 136.1 basis points. The next event watched by the market remains the national strike scheduled in France on November 5.

July 2022: one euro for one dollar

On 13 July 2022 the euro touched one dollar for the first time in twenty years, then went below, down to 0.95 in September. Three causes added up: the price of gas, which Europe imports and America exports, a Federal Reserve raising rates far faster than the European Central Bank, and finally a war fifteen hundred kilometres from Frankfurt.

The recovery that followed had the same causes in reverse. That episode was a reminder that EUR/USD is not a thermometer of growth: it measures first an interest rate gap and a geographic risk premium.

Two calendars, sixteen dates a year

The most traded pair in the world is in reality played out over sixteen days a year: the eight meetings of the American monetary policy committee and the eight of the European governing council. Between those dates, every inflation or employment figure is read as a clue to what those meetings will decide.

For a company invoicing in dollars, that has a practical translation. Publication days are the worst moments to place a large order: the gap between the buying price and the selling price widens, sometimes by several tenths, while the market digests the news.

Frequently asked questions about USD / EUR exchange

The USD / EUR converter

6 questions
What is the b-sharpe USD / EUR currency converter for?

The b-sharpe USD / EUR converter gives you the live value of the dollar in euros, continuously updated from interbank quotes. This gross rate, with no fees added, is the benchmark for checking how much you should really get when converting your US dollars. The 30-day chart lets you view recent rate movements before you decide. To take action, visit change your currency.

How much is 100 dollars in euros today?

Enter 100 in the converter above: the equivalent in euros is displayed immediately, at the current rate. The calculation consists of multiplying the amount in dollars by the USD/EUR rate: at a rate of 0.88, for example, 100 US dollars are worth 88 euros. This value changes throughout the day, because the euro-dollar pair is the most traded in the world, and this volume of transactions keeps its rate moving constantly. The amount displayed is a benchmark without fees: what you actually receive depends on the margin applied by your bank or provider.

Is the USD / EUR rate updated in real time?

Yes, the displayed rate is updated in real time during foreign exchange market opening hours. It reflects supply and demand for dollars and euros at the precise moment you view the page, and can therefore move from one minute to the next during a major economic announcement. To follow the value of the dollar in euros over time, the 30-day chart traces recent movements. If the rate suits you, you can lock it for 48 hours from your client area.

Is now a good time to exchange dollars for euros?

No one can say for sure: the dollar’s rate against the euro depends on many factors, such as decisions by the US Federal Reserve (Fed) and the ECB, inflation, and economic and political news. Rather than trying to anticipate, you can set a target rate and activate an alert to be notified when it is reached. When the rate suits you, lock it for 48 hours to secure your conversion. Finally, if you convert a large sum in several instalments, you smooth out the effect of fluctuations.

Does the USD / EUR rate displayed on the converter include fees?

No. The rate displayed on the b-sharpe converter is the interbank rate, i.e. the market rate without any added fees. This is the purest reference value, the one banks use among themselves. The rate you will get when making a real exchange through b-sharpe includes transaction fees from 0.12%, which allows savings of up to 80% compared to banks.

Does the converter take weekends into account?

The foreign exchange market closes at weekends: on Saturday and Sunday, the converter displays the last known rate, for information only. This rate is not contractual, as the value of the dollar may differ when the market reopens, particularly after a major announcement. Conversions resume on Monday morning, as soon as the market opens. So as not to miss a movement at the start of the week, set a rate alert on the level you are interested in.

8 questions
How do I exchange dollars for euros?

If you are back from a trip with banknotes, a bureau de change or your bank can buy them back, but often with a significant gap compared with the benchmark rate. For dollars held in an account, a bank transfer is the most suitable solution, through your bank or an online provider. With b-sharpe, you send your dollars to the details shown in your client area, your dollars are converted into euros based on the interbank rate, with fees from 0.12% that decrease as the amount increases, and the euros are then paid into your bank account. The exact amount you will receive is displayed before you confirm.

Why does the dollar to euro rate vary from one provider to another?

All providers start from the same benchmark rate, the interbank rate, at which banks exchange currencies with each other. The difference comes from the margin each one adds: traditional banks often apply a margin of up to 2%, rarely shown as separate fees. b-sharpe starts from the interbank rate and shows its fees, from 0.12%, before each conversion, which lets you save up to 80% on transaction fees compared with a bank. To compare, always look at the final amount in euros rather than just the advertised rate, as in our exchange fee comparison.

Can I lock the rate I see now?

The online converter displays the market rate in real time without fees, for simulation purposes. To lock a rate and initiate a transaction, simply create a free account on b-sharpe. From your client area, you can lock your rate for 48 hours. You will then have full visibility of the final amount to be received, including our transaction fees (from 0.12%): no surprises, you receive exactly the displayed amount. You can also set up rate alerts to be notified when the USD / EUR rate reaches your desired threshold.

How long does it take to receive my euros?

Generally allow 1 to 2 working days between b-sharpe receiving your dollars and the euros arriving in your account. The timeframe starts when your funds are received, not when you initiate the transaction: a dollar transfer from a US bank may itself take a little time. It also varies depending on the amount and the bank receiving the euros. Working days exclude weekends and public holidays; in all cases, the exact amount you will receive is displayed before you confirm.

Is my money safe?

b-sharpe is a Swiss financial intermediary affiliated to SO-FIT, a self-regulatory organisation recognised by the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA), which checks in particular compliance with anti-money laundering rules. The dollars you send arrive in a bank account in Switzerland, separate from the company’s own funds. These funds are also covered by insurance of 5 million CHF against fraud and hacking. Finally, b-sharpe cannot debit money from your accounts: you are always the one who initiates the transfer.

Is there a minimum amount to exchange currencies?

No, there is no minimum amount for a one-off transaction, whether you convert a few dozen dollars or a large sum. There is no subscription and no fixed fee: you only pay fees proportional to the amount converted, from 0.12% and decreasing as the amount increases. Before confirming, you see the exact amount in euros that you will receive. For large amounts, b-sharpe’s desk can help you secure your rate.

How can I convert income received in dollars into euros?

If you are paid in dollars, for example a salary or assignments for a US company, rental income or dividends, each conversion into euros can cost you dearly in bank margins. With b-sharpe, you transfer these dollars from the account where you receive them, then convert them when the rate suits you. Rate alerts help you spot the right moment, and you can lock a rate for 48 hours before confirming. On income converted every month, the difference adds up: 1% on 3,000 dollars represents 30 dollars a month, or 360 dollars a year.

How do I create a b-sharpe account?

Registration is free and without commitment: you only pay when you convert. It is done online, on the website or the app, and b-sharpe accepts residents of European countries, not just those of Switzerland. Once your file is complete, activation generally takes less than 24 working hours. You will then find in your client area the details for sending your dollars, as well as the tools to lock a rate or create alerts.
